What Is GEO? How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT

TL;DR

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your business easy for AI answer engines to find, understand, trust and cite. It builds on SEO but emphasizes answer-first content, structured data (schema.org), consistent business information across the web, and third-party mentions that AI models treat as evidence.

More and more customers start with a question to an AI assistant instead of a list of blue links: “Who’s the best family dentist in Park Slope?” or “Which AI agency in New York builds custom CRMs?” The assistant answers with a few names. If you’re not one of them, you’re invisible for that customer.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is how you become one of those names.

GEO vs. SEO in one table

SEO GEO
Goal Rank as a link on a results page Be quoted, cited or recommended inside an AI answer
Unit of competition The page The fact, passage or entity
Key signals Links, relevance, technical health Clarity, consistency, structured data, third-party corroboration
Where it shows up Google, Bing results ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Google AI Overviews, Copilot

They overlap heavily. A site that is slow, uncrawlable or thin will struggle with both. But GEO rewards some things classic SEO under-weights.

How AI engines decide what to recommend

Most AI answer engines combine two sources of knowledge:

  1. What the model already learned during training — which depends on how often, and how consistently, your business is described across the web.
  2. What it retrieves live from search indexes when answering — which depends on whether your pages are crawlable, relevant and easy to quote.

That means GEO has an on-site side (make your pages the easiest possible source to quote) and an off-site side (make sure the rest of the web agrees about who you are).

The 10-step GEO checklist

  1. Lead every page with a direct answer. Put a one- or two-sentence definition or summary at the top. AI systems love quotable, self-contained passages.
  2. Use real numbers. Prices, timelines, service areas, response times. Specific facts get cited; vague claims get skipped.
  3. Add schema.org structured data. At minimum: Organization or LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList and Article.
  4. Keep your NAP identical everywhere. Name, address and phone should match exactly on your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp and industry directories.
  5. Let AI crawlers in. Check your robots.txt doesn’t block GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended unless you mean to.
  6. Publish an llms.txt file. A plain-language summary of your business and key pages at /llms.txt gives AI systems a clean overview.
  7. Server-render your content. Many AI crawlers don’t run JavaScript. If your text only appears after scripts load, it may not be seen at all.
  8. Build pages for each service and location. A page that clearly answers “AI automation in Brooklyn” is more likely to be retrieved for that question than a generic homepage.
  9. Earn third-party mentions. Reviews, local press, podcasts, partner directories and “best of” lists act as corroborating evidence.
  10. Measure prompts, not just rankings. Track a fixed set of buyer-intent questions across AI engines every month and record who gets mentioned.

A quick self-test

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini: “Who are the best [your service] providers in [your neighborhood or city]?” Then ask: “What does [your business name] do and what does it cost?”

If the first question doesn’t mention you, you have a visibility problem. If the second gets details wrong, you have a consistency problem. Both are fixable.

The bottom line

GEO isn’t a trick — it’s being the clearest, most consistent, most verifiable source of information about your business. Do that, and both search engines and AI assistants have every reason to recommend you.
